Starting in 1970, June Newtoncreated own photographic works under the pseudonym Alice Springs. These havebeen exhibited regularly at the Helmut Newton Foundation since 2005, explicitly in“June’s Room.” This retrospective called People of her work at the Galleria Carla Sozzani, until April 22, provides for the first time a comprehensive lookat the four decades that span her work, presenting photographs from advertisingand fashion as well as nudes and portraits.  Her own photographic oeuvre beganwith a bout of influenza suffered by Helmut Newton in Paris, 1970. June Newtonhad her husband show her how to handle the camera and light meter and in hisplace photographed an advertisement for the French cigarette brand Gitanes. Theportrait of the smoking model would be the jump start of a new career. In theearly 1970s, Alice Springs shot several campaigns for the French hair stylistJean Louis David; the photographs appeared under her byline as full-page ads inrenowned fashion magazines. 1974 saw the first Alice Springs cover imageadorning French Elle.  Bythis time she had also received innumerable commissions for portraits, some ofwhich have be converted into iconic. The roster of artists, actors and musicians depictedby Alice Springs over the last 40 years reads like a “who’s who” of theinternational cultural scene on both sides of the Atlantic.
